What Information Can Be Gleaned From a Taro Card Reading

I have always been chronically indecisive. Over the years, I'd turned ignoring my gut instincts into an fine art form. Even when I knew a conclusion was the right ane, the "what-nearly-isms" would creep in, and I'd ofttimes exist paralysed – missing opportunities, or getting stuck in situations that made me unhappy.

When I took upwardly tarot on a whim during lockdown, I wasn't expecting much – perhaps a good political party trick, or a conversation starter for whenever I was finally back in a room with my friends. What I got was a shortcut to my instincts.

I had owned a pack of tarot cards (Mystic Mondays, by Grace Duong) for a few years – mostly down to its beautiful designs and women-centric characters. But without guidance, I was never quite sure what to make of information technology. So when I saw that Nancy Mabey, an immensely cool, pink-haired witch I followed on Instagram (@thehomebrewwitch) was running an eight-calendar week Zoom course to become to know the fine art of tarot, I signed upwards on impulse. Subsequently all, what else was I going to do on a locked-downward Sunday dark?

I'grand not a terribly spiritual person – I never had that The Arts and crafts phase at school, or tried to commune with higher powers (at to the lowest degree, not unless stuff got really bad). But tarot'due south entreatment, for me, lay in its versatility. "People use tarot in a range of ways," says Nancy. "From what everyone thinks tarot is – predicting the future – to a tool for reflection and self-exploration. At that place are too writers and artists who utilise the cards equally prompts. Only what they all accept in common is using tarot to connect the hidden to the conscious."

Tarot's popularity is on the rising – with card sales up 50 per cent in recent years, viii.5m #tarot results on Instagram on an average 24-hour interval, and witch influencers gaining huge audiences. "Magic has ever been a style that the average person tin have a bit of power and control back," says Nancy, who also points out that interest in "witchy" hobbies tends to increase during new waves of feminism. And it makes sense that when women feel permit downwards by traditionally "masculine" ways of doing things (read: just near everything to do with politics – even in 2020), we might turn to traditionally feminine sources of knowledge, such equally tuning into our own intuition.

My tarot group was encouraged from calendar week i of the form to offset a daily pull: asking, "What do I need to recollect about today?", taking a moment to articulate the mind, then blindly choosing a bill of fare. During lockdown, there'due south been a temptation to curlicue out of bed and pretty much direct to my desk. But pulling my daily card offered a window of reflection before I got lost in my emails. Here was an opportunity to consider how my mean solar day might unfold; what might crusade problems; where my best chances for success might lie. And, almost chiefly, it offered me the space to discover how I felt near those things.

This year in particular, many of united states of america accept struggled to find motivation and direction, and I'k not lonely in feeling powerless in the face of worldwide chaos. I don't necessarily align with the mystical, predictive elements of tarot, but it has given me back some command – at that place are still minor choices I can make on a daily ground that tin immediately impact my happiness.

When my book club decided to go back to the pub and abandon the virtual see-ups that had been a lifeline to me during lockdown, I drew the three of cups reversed (upside downward). This is a menu that's all most friendships being out of whack, or the party beingness over, and information technology affirmed my determination to exit the group rather than meeting in a risky, multi-household setting. It was a painful option, and one that left me feeling quite lonely and vulnerable, but leaving my card on my desk all day helped strengthen my resolve.

When I've been burned out, the cards have nudged me to take a day off mid-week, something that oftentimes feels hard to justify as a freelancer. I've also felt repeatedly buoyed upward while launching a daunting solo project (a newsletter for self-employed women), by pulling cards such equally the hermit (looking within yourself for answers), and the wheel of fortune (big changes on the horizon). Often the answers were there all along, but tarot has been the tool that's immune me to unlock them.

Each card is open up to interpretation – and more ofttimes than not, I would translate my cards equally relating to my work. How can I make this new project go smoothly? When would be a good fourth dimension to pitch an article? (FYI, I pitched this very article after drawing the ace of wands – an invitation to a new opportunity relating to creativity or ambition.) But this habit in itself points to a bit of an outcome. According to Nancy, it's pretty mutual for people to captivate over a specific area of life when they read their cards – but it's something I'm now more aware of. In general, I tend to bury myself in my work. Using tarot each mean solar day highlighted that a more holistic arroyo was required, and I at present brand an effort to really examine the message behind each card – could they actually be almost my relationships or passions, rather than tied to my career?

"Pulling a carte each twenty-four hour period works in two ways," says Nancy. "Firstly, it's giving yourself time to but exist with yourself, and secondly it helps you lot build up trust in yourself and your intuition. Most of the time we have the answers deep down inside, but particularly equally women, we don't always trust ourselves." For me, spending a few minutes each day on self-reflection has been a existent souvenir. While I struggle to get to grips with mindfulness or meditation, having a visual reminder to proceed my life balanced has already helped me brand real world changes – and stick to them. I'm slowly learning to trust my gut instincts, one card at a fourth dimension.
